KATHERINE DUNHAM
June 22, 1909 - May 21, 2006

"When you have faith in something, it's your reason to be alive and to fight for it."
-- Katherine Dunham
About Us

Katherine Dunham's first known visit to Atlanta was in 1972 while performing "Treemonisha" with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.  Through the years, she returned on many occasions and embraced different generations of Atlantans.  Her final appearance was in 1996 on the occasion of the NBAF during the same period of the Centennial Olympic Games.  Many were present to enjoy her gracious presence, and she left so many dear memories in place in the South.

Inspired by her formulative training in Dunham Technique, Carol Lloyd forged a bond with Katherine Dunham and was subsequently granted the rights to the establishment of the Dunham Institute-Atlanta (DI-A). Since the passing of Ms. Dunham, DI-A recognizes the need to "preserve the legacy" with the provision of an online repository.  This online repository will serve to disseminate information regarding the Dunham legacy, and to bring people together from all corners of the world to celebrate the journey in dance through current events.  This site  will serve to retain the integrity and authenticity of the legacy while documenting the progression of life's movement as we continue to write the story through our individual and collective experiences. Please, feel free to submit your Dunham events via our "Contact Us" page so that we can announce the activities that are occurring in your community.
