KATHERINE DUNHAM
June 22, 1909 - May 21, 2006
"When you have faith in something, it's your reason to be alive and to fight for it."
-- Katherine Dunham

Detroit Legacy Project
The Detroit Legacy Project was founded in June, 2006 in an effort to preserve and further the work of Katherine Dunham, by a group of students, teachers and activists, who have been deeply impacted by Dunham Technique. It is the mission of the Project to see that the foundation of her technique lives on.
Detroit Legacy Project is designed to touch on all aspects of dance and related arts, to introduce and teach across the Detroit community and to bring students and teachers from around the world to Detroit to study and share knowledge. As part of our mission, we will use the Dunham Technique to impart the philosophy rooted in the form and function of the arts, serving to educate about dance and life originating in the African Diaspora.
One goal is to establish a permanent training center in Detroit, applying the Dunham Technique, where generations to come may continue to learn and apply her technique to their lives. The Detroit Legacy Project is housed under the umbrella of the PG Institute.
