A former principal dancer with Katherine Dunham, Ed Brown retired from the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) Katherine Dunham Centers for Arts & Humanities (KDCAH) program. Along with Andrea Smythe, Theo Jamison and a few others, he taught one of the last accredited Dunham programs through the University. Mr. Brown dedicated over 25 years of service to KDCAH while initially participating as an acting student. He performed on numerous occasions with the company at Wolf Trap, and to his credit received specialized training and development from Katherine Dunham, Archie Savage, Ruth Beckford, Clifford Fears, Ural Wilson, Tommy Gomez, Lucille Ellis and many of the original Dunham company members.
Mr. Brown, with a select group of Dunham performers, starred in Scott Joplin's "Tremonisha" at the Atlanta Civic Center in 1972. As well, Miss Dunham choreographed Scott Joplin's "Solace" in a piece entitled "Tango" on Ed Brown in 1972. He performed at the Gala at Carnegie Hall upon Miss Dunham's receipt of the Albert Schweitzer Award (1979). Mr. Brown, in his role as a master tap instructor, competed in local, regional, national and international competitions. A consummate professional, Ed Brown was featured in commercial and film projects on the "Underground Railroad" project in the midwest region. He also taught percussion with an emphasis on West African, Haitian and Cuban Ensemble Rhythms. A graduate of SIUE with a major in Fine Arts (emphasis on Theatre and Dance) Mr. Brown is a former theatre student of Alan and Joanna Nichols as well as Ralph Green. He currently works throughout the Metro East area including the Venice, & Love Joy, Illinois, and St. Louis, Missouri School Districts.
